Sutton Makes It Two In a Row In Greensville

GREENVILLE, S.C. (June 28, 2003) — It was a wild and crazy night at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, but in the end, Kelly "Girl" Sutton brought home her second consecutive top ten finish. Sutton qualified 20th of 26 teams, but was not happy with how the car was handling. The team pulled the car from the line-up and made some major changes. As a result, Sutton was forced to start at the back of the field. Sutton advanced several positions until lap 16, when several cars lost control, and she broadsided the spinning car in front of her.

Sutton's front bumper was ripped from her car, and bounced under her wheel, completely shredding her right front tire. The hood was badly buckled, and she could not see the track in front of her. The team coached her around on the radio, and Sutton drove blindly into the pits. The beaten car skidded to an awkward stop and the crew pounced on top of the hood, doing everything they could to restore her view, while the right front tire was changed. Sutton came into pit road five times during the caution period to get the hood down, and make some adjustments. The car wasn't pretty, but it ran ... and ran well.

Sutton avoided subsequent accidents and spins, and was able to push her way through the field. She finished in 11th place, but a disqualification of race winner Wade Day after a post-race inspection, gave runner-up, Cam Strader, the win, and moved the team into the 10th spot.

With two consecutive top ten finishes in June, Kelly "Girl" Sutton has vaulted to 6th in the overall point standings, and is only 35 points out of the top five. Sutton travels to the 1.5 mile Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, Ky. July 11th, for the "Goody's Dash 150".
