Huffman Captures His Third Win of 2003 at Kentucky Speedway

Sparta, KY. (July 11, 2003) — Goody's Dash Series Points leader Robert Huffman (No. 37 White House Apple Juice Toyota) picked up his second career win at Kentucky Speedway Friday night. Huffman’s victory at Kentucky makes it three out three wins at Superpeedways this season. Huffman fended off a hard charging Justin Hobgood (No. 65 Germain Motorsports Pontiac) on the closing laps to collect his 41st win of his Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring career.

"We had a good car but Justin's was better," Huffman said. "I’ve always run well here. Each time we’ve come back we used a decent set-up. This race, we made an adjustment to the shocks that allowed me to run wide-open 90 percent of the race. That brought me into first."

Huffman took the lead on lap 59 passing race leader Eric Wilson (Old Milwaukee/John Boy & Billy Pontiac) and lead the closing 40 laps of the 100-lap battle and made one pit stop on Lap 46 for fuel only. Justin Hobgood (No. 65 Germain Motorsports Pontiac) finished second after over coming a mistake on pit road. Hobgood had a stout car all day as he set a new qualifying record during Bud Pole qualifying with a time of 35.545/151.920 breaking Robert Huffman's record of 36.136/149.435.

"It was a decent run," Hobgood said. "I made a mistake on pit row when I drove right past the pit. I was thinking that I was stopping later when I should have stopped earlier. Before the race, I looked at our pit on paper and I thought that I was looking at Turn 1 and it was really Turn 4. We had a good car we could have done better without my mistake."

Jake Hobgood qualified 11th but was sent to the rear of the field at the race start for missing the mandatory driver's meeting. He compounded the problem by jumping the start of the race and drawing a black flag stop-and-go penalty from NASCAR officials on Lap 1. He finished the race 13th.

"We had trouble at the beginning because of the black flag stop-and-go, but that was my misunderstanding," he said. "I thought you could pass to the right, but that's my mistake. I thought we had a top-five car. Looking back, going that lap down really cost us."

Huffman's win at Kentucky Speedway keeps him atop of the Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring points standings. He entered the day with a 64-point lead over Jake Hobgood (No. 64 Germain Toyota) and a 68-point lead over Justin Hobgood. Justin Hobgood posts his third second-place finish of the season.

Danny Bagwell (No. 10 Sterling Casino Lines/Torbert Trucking Ford) was third and Mickey York (No. 24 Wesson Oil/Peter Pan Peanut Butter Pontiac) was fourth. Rookie Eric Wilson, who led 11 laps in the race, rounded out the top-five to take his highest finish of the season

The next event for Goody's Dash Series will be on August 20, 2003 at the famed 533 mile, paved high banked oval of Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, TN.
