Sutton Runs Well At Rougemont, But Tangles In Accident With Teammate
April 27, 2002
ROUGEMONT, N.C. It was a tough night in Rougemont.
Despite starting out in a less-than-ideal 21st-place qualifying spot at the Orange County 150, Kelly Sutton and team were determined to push forward. Sutton made a quiet run early to secure a spot toward the front of the pack of the NASCAR Touring Division, Goodys Dash Series race.
We were really feeling good out there, Sutton said. The car was running great, the team was confident. I was feeling great
it was going to be our night.
But it was not meant to be for Team COPAXONE® (glatiramer acetate injection) that night. On Lap 80, teammate Cam Strader tried squeezing past Sutton heading into turn three. The result: the two tangled with each other in the front stretch and Strader plowed directly into the wall. But Straders ride was not yet over. His car jerked sharply and flipped six times before landing on its wheels. Amazingly, both Sutton and Strader walked away from the collision without injuries.
Despite netting her second crash in a row, Sutton remained optimistic.
As I have said before, thats racing, Sutton said. Accidents happen and it is disappointing, sure. But Im glad both Cam and I were safe. I know we were doing well as a team out there. This is just going to make the next victory especially sweet.
The #02 Team COPAXONE® Pontiac Sunfire heads to Coeburn, VA, May 11. COPAXONE® is a registered trademark of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries Ltd.
