Goody’s Dash Series, NASCAR Touring 2002 Preview

December 26, 2001

The 2002 Goody’s Dash Series, NASCAR Touring may turn out to be one of the most competitive in recent years, due largely to the return of most of the drivers in the top ten in points from 2001. The Series Champion, Cam Strader, plans to return to defend his title. Strader intends to run a limited number of ARCA and Busch events along with the full Goody’s Dash Series, NASCAR Touring Schedule. The 2001 MAG-KLIP Rookie of the Year, Shane Hmiel, is the only driver announcing plans to leave the series for a full-time ride in Busch Series competition.

Four time series’ Champion, Robert Huffman, spent considerable time, during the off season, fine tuning his Toyota powerplant at TRD’s facilities in California. After winning four events in 2001 his team should be ready to apply a strong challenge throughout the 2002 season. Also returning are the Hobgood brothers, Justin and Jake. Both drivers collected two wins in 2001 and finished in the top five in the series' points battle. Roger Sawyer, who won two events in 2001, finished 8th in points after missing the final event. Sawyer, along with drivers like Wayne Edwards, Joey Miller, and Tim Nichols gained valuable experience in 2001 and show the maturity to be Championship contenders. The list continues to grow when you consider cagey veterans like Larry Caudill, Scott Weaver, Danny Bagwell, and Ned Combs. These four drivers have years of experience in the Goody's Dash Series and are routinely in the top 10 contending for a win.

Randy Humphrey combined efforts with Robert Huffman half way through the 2001 season. He hired Huffman's longtime crew chief, David Flynn. Huffman has also taken Scott Krehling under his wing. Krehling along with Nichols will join the Toyota ranks in 2002. And don’t forget guys like Gary Moore, Mickey York, Johnny Chapman, Greg Goodell, Brent Moore, Doc Brewer, B.J Mackey, and 1995 Champion David Hutto. All have made their presence known in previous appearances.

Then you add to the mix two very exciting MAG-KLIP Rookie of the Year contenders, Kelly Sutton and Chuck Gafrarar. Sutton has participated on a limited basis over the past few years. Gafrarar came to the series late in 2001 and showed promise with one top five and two top ten finishes.

This may well be the most experienced list of drivers the series has had in a number of years. Put all of this together with a schedule that boasts some of the most exciting tracks in stock car racing, and you have a combination for an exciting season.
